You’ve got a good idea. Now let’s see whether it survives Monday.

I help cities, cultural institutions and social organisations get from ‘this makes sense’ to ‘this actually works’ — especially when plenty of people are involved, perspectives have drifted apart and the easy answers have run out.

The work starts where the slides end.

First we work out what you are actually trying to change. Then we do something useful about it.From ‘everyone knows something is broken’ to someone finally taking responsibility for it.

01

Find direction

Bring fragmented perspectives together and name the right problem without pretending the complexity has politely gone away.

occasionally the first deliverable is discovering there are four problems, not one

02

Design the answer

Turn ambition into a service, programme or way of working grounded in real needs.

perfect processes work beautifully. particularly in imaginary organisations

03

Test it in practice

Challenge assumptions, make decisions and prepare the idea for a pilot or implementation.

reality retains the right to object. it generally does

I do not arrive with the answer tucked into a polished PDF.

I usually begin by listening to people who are quite sure they are discussing the same thing. Then I show where their versions part company, help them make decisions and make sure the meeting produces more than another meeting.I put people who have spent months describing the same problem in different words in one room. Then I make sure someone finally makes a decision.

*a workshop can change everything. terms apply: something must change afterwards

For over a decade, I have worked on projects where everyone is right — just about a different part.

I have worked on initiatives connecting business, cities, public administration, science, healthcare and communities — from early research and shared direction to pilots and implementation.I have seen brilliant ideas, political landmines, ownerless processes and three-month pilots entering their second year. Complexity and I are on speaking terms.

People tend to call me when the idea is still good, but the project has stopped being simple. The challenge matters. Many people are involved. Everyone is right, which is why nothing is moving.

01

An ambitious idea is stuck between interests, processes and expectations.complete agreement. on entirely different matters.

02

The organisation needs shared direction, not another deck of recommendations.the deck is finished. splendid. the decision is not.

03

A solution must be designed and tested before it consumes a serious budget and everyone’s energy.test the assumption first. the budget has suffered enough.

Right. What’s gone sideways?

You do not need a brief or the name of a service you think you ought to buy. Tell me what you are trying to change, who is involved and where the conversation keeps going in circles.I do not need a brief. Tell me what is not working, who is tired of it and why nobody has moved it yet.
